Design & Construct

Drywall / sheetrock Dry lining is a construction product commonly used to finish building interiors, usually to make walls and ceilings. Drywall, also known as plasterboard or gypsum board, is a panel made of gypsum plaster pressed between two thick sheets of paper or fiberglass matting. Depending on the manufacturer, certain additions, such as anti-mildew and fire-resistant materials, are mixed with the gypsum plaster before applying the paper or matting. Plasterboard panels are also known as wallboard or Sheetrock.

Drywall panels are manufactured in 48 inch wide panels in varying lengths to suit the application. Common panel thicknesses are 1/2" and 5/8", with panels also available in 1/4" and 3/8". Thicker panels may be used to reduce heat loss. In addition to increased R-value, thicker drywall also has a higher sound transmission class.

Built Right offers a variety of residential drywalling services to our customers in Pierce and Thurston County in Western Washington. These include installation, repair, and texturing. Our work can be found in homes spanning the Puget Sound area, including Centralia, Olympia, Tacoma, and Puyallup. We do both new construction and remodel. Our experienced drywall professionals are skilled in all facets of drywalling, including taping, hanging, priming, mudding, sanding, and applying corner bead. They will help you to achieve the look that you desire for your residence. Our drywall experts create some of the most beautiful walls and ceilings in homes. In fact, a small investment in drywall may add significant value to your home.

The type of drywall finish and texture you select depends on the room and its decor. Take into account your use of the room, who will see it, and whether or not you want to paint it, to determine which to choose. Popular finishes and textures are listed below:

  • Knockdown is a popular drywall finish that uses a textured plaster to create the final look. The textured wall is "bumpy" when finished, with unique shapes that are raised from the walls. Some popular types of knockdowns are California Knockdown, Slapbrush Knockdown and Drywall Knockdown
  • Lace texture requires more work, patience and skill than some of the other finishes. A bristled brush is used to pat the drywall. It is finished by smashing the points created by the brush after the wall dries. You then end up with a wall that looks like it has a lace pattern.
  • Spray Sand texturing is where the finished wall looks like sand, creating tiny bumps on the wall. With the right coat of paint, your finished walls can look like any one of the more expensive textures.
  • Orange Peel is texture that is achieved by spraying on joint compound that has been thinned. Creating this effect requires that the compound should not be so thin that it will run when applied. Used as a fast way to apply a finish, the look will be different according to the size of the nozzle on the sprayer used as well as how far away from the wall it is applied.
  • Trowelled Look is achieved by putting the drywall compound on with a drywall knife. This is usually put on in a semi-circle. They may have high spots and low spots and even be different sizes. The look is varied by using heavier coats with larger semi-circles. This look is similar to that of Spanish stucco. It can also be a smooth semicircle and resemble a plaster finish.
  • Mud swirl is similar to trowel finishes. The big difference is the semi-circle or swirl that is applied has a uniform shape. When completed the wall will have a pattern that repeats itself.
  • Brush textures go by several names; stomp brush, slap brush, and crow's feet. One thing they all have in common is the use of a drywall texture brush. This brush can be used for simple fast textures to unusual and unique textures that are eye catching.
  • Skim coating is achieved when the last layer that goes on the wall is applied evenly. The use of this method is for creating a wall that is almost perfectly smooth. When people have a wall they are putting coverings on that are lighter or if they have an area that will have more light than normal, this is typically the type of finish they choose.
